B&B ITALIA WAS FOUNDED IN 1966 BY THE ENTERPRISING AND CHARISMATIC PIERO AMBROGIO BUSNELLI. THE COMPANY QUICKLY BECAME AN INTERNATIONAL REFERENCE POINT FOR UPHOLSTERED FURNISHING THANKS TO A BRILLIANT NEW TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESS WHICH INTRODUCED AN INDUSTRIAL APPROACH TO MANUFACTURING DESIGNER FURNISHINGS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF THE SECTOR. OVER A PERIOD OF DECADES, ITS INNOVATIVE INFLUENCE SPREAD TO OTHER SECTORS IN HOME AND OUTDOOR FURNISHINGS AND FINALLY REACHED THE CONTRACT FURNITURE MARKET.
B&B ITALIA PERCEIVED THE DRIVE TOWARD MODERNISATION AND INDUSTRIALISATION IN ITALY AS AN INSPIRATION FOR DARING NEW PRODUCTS. EARLY ON, THE COMPANY BEGAN A DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE ITALIAN DESIGN CULTURE AND INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONALS. THE THEN REVOLUTIONARY TECHNOLOGY OF INJECTION MOULDING (COLD MOULDED POLYURETHANE FOAM) ALLOWED THE CREATION OF DESIGN ICONS SUCH AS UP, CORONADO, LOMBRICO AND AMANTA.
DURING A TIME OF GREAT ARTISTIC ACTIVITY, FUELED BY NEW MEANS OF EXPRESSION AND MORE DARING VOICES, B&B ITALIA ALSO BECAME A LEADER IN COMMUNICATIONS. OLIVIERO TOSCANI CREATED THE LAUNCH CAMPAIGN FOR “LE BAMBOLE” (GOLDEN COMPASS IN 1972), AND THE PROVOCATIVE PICTURES OF DONNA JORDAN, ANDY WARHOL’S MUSE, CONTINUED TO DRAW ATTENTION TO B&B ITALIA’S INNOVATIVE ENERGY. MAXALTO WAS FOUNDED IN 1975. RESEARCH LOOKED TO THE PAST THROUGH NEW INTERPRETATIONS OF CLASSIC FORMS, AND BORROWED FROM TRADITIONAL ARTISAN CABINET MAKING PROCESSES. THE RESULT WAS A NEW COLLECTION OF SOLID WOOD FURNISHINGS, THANKS TO THE CONTRIBUTION OF AFRA AND TOBIA SCARPA (ARTONA 1975, NEW ARMONY 1979).
YEARS OF RADICAL CHANGE. THE FUTURE TOOK ON A DOUBLE IDENTITY, BECOMING BOTH PROMISING AND THREATENING DESIGN. CULTURE CONSEQUENTLY MOVED BETWEEN TRADITION AND EXPERIMENTATION. DESIGNED BY STUDIO KAIROS, SISAMO WARDROBE SYSTEM WON GOLDEN COMPASS IN 1984, THUS MARKING B&B ITALIA AS A LEADING COMPANY ALSO IN THE INNOVATION OF BEDROOM FURNITURE. B&B ITALIA CHANGED THE RULES OF THE GAME IN THE UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE BUSINESS BY INTRODUCING A REVOLUTIONARY NEW PIECE, THE UNIQUE SITY (GOLDEN COMPASS, 1987), THE FIRST “SEATING SYSTEM” WITH MULTIPLE COMPOSITION POSSIBILITIES: “NO TWO SITIES ARE THE SAME”. MAXALTO CONTINUED ITS RESEARCH WITH AFRA AND TOBIA SCARPA AND PRESENTED DAMASCO [1989] AND DOMINO [1991]. THE 1989, THE GOLDEN COMPASS PRIZE WAS AWARDED TO B&B ITALIA FOR ITS CONTRIBUTION TO ITALIAN DESIGN. THE FIRST TIME THIS AWARD HAS BEEN GIVEN TO A COMPANY AND NOT A PRODUCT.THE INDUSTRY STARTED TO RECOVER. B&B ITALIA WAS CONFIDENT OF ITS HIGH IMPACT DESIGNS AND CAUGHT THE WORLD’S ATTENTION WITH FURNISHINGS OF THE CALIBRE OF DOMUS (1989), HARRY (1995) AND CHARLES (1997). THE FIRST TRANSFORMS AND REINVENTS DOMESTIC WALLS WITH A SYSTEM OF BOOKCASES AND WALL SHELVING FEATURING AN INNOVATIVE NEW MECHANISM FOR VERTICAL SLIDING DOORS. HARRY AND CHARLES MEANWHILE INTRODUCE A NEW CONCEPT OF PURE, LINEAR DESIGN, WHICH COMBINES AUSTERE LOOKS WITH FUNCTION (INTRODUCING THE CONCEPT OF THE CHAISE LONGUE END UNIT). FOR MAXALTO, THERE WAS A RADICAL CHANGE. ANTONIO CITTERIO BECAME THE INTERPRETER OF THE NEW MAXALTO SPIRIT AND CREATED THE COLLECTION APTA [1996]. HIS WORK TOOK A NEW LOOK AT THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY AND SUBSEQUENTLY FOUND IDEAL REFERENCES IN THE FORMS AND STYLES OF FRENCH FURNITURE DESIGN BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS. THE SENSE OF PROPORTION, THE TACTILE VALUE OF WOOD AND THE QUALITY OF DETAILS ARE ALL ASPECTS WHICH ARE IMPORTANT IN HIS VARIOUS DESIGNS, COORDINATED SO AS TO OFFER FLEXIBLE ANSWERS TO DIFFERING NEEDS.
THE BEGINNING OF THE MILLENNIUM SAW EVENTS WHICH CREATED NEW POLITICAL AND CULTURAL BALANCES. THE CONSTANT CHANGES IN ITALIAN DESIGN THROUGH THESE YEARS CONTINUED TO BUILD ITS INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION. AS IT HAS ALREADY DONE IN THE PAST, B&B ITALIA CREATED PRIVILEGED RELATIONSHIPS WITH SEVERAL DESIGNERS, RESULTING IN DECISIVE NEW DESIGNS. PATRICIA URQUIOLA CREATED IMPORTANT PROJECTS FOR B&B ITALIA SUCH AS FAT-FAT AND LENS (2002-2003), TUFTY TIME AND LAZY (2005). SHE ALSO DESIGNED THE COLLECTION CANASTA (2007), WHICH WAS IMPORTANT IN LAUNCHING B&B ITALIA OUTDOOR, THE NEW LINE OF FURNISHINGS THAT TOOK THE COMPANY’S INNOVATION AND DESIGN OUTSIDE TO PROVIDE PLEASANT, COMFORTABLE GARDEN AND PATIO SETTINGS. AND THEN THERE WERE SPECIAL ENCOUNTERS, THAT LED TO LASTING PARTNERSHIPS AND EXCEPTIONAL AFFINITIES. THROUGH ANTONIO CITTERIO, THE DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF STYLE AND DESIGN EMERGED AS THE VOCATION OF MAXALTO: CONSTANT RESEARCH INTO QUALITY AT THE MEETING POINT OF SOPHISTICATED CRAFTSMANSHIP AND TECHNOLOGY. THE NEW COLLECTIONS SIMPLICE [2001] AND AC [2003] WERE LAUNCHED. THEY SHOWED THE BRAND PHILOSOPHY, MORE AUSTERE FORMS AND DESIGN, MORE ESSENTIAL VOLUMES, AND A NEW RANGE OF WOODS AND FINISHES WHICH EFFECTIVELY MIRRORED TRENDS IN CONTEMPORARY STYLE. THE B&B ITALIA LIFESTYLE MOVED INTO THE PUBLIC AREA (OFFICES, RESTAURANTS, LOUNGES, HOTELS…) AND WITH THE B&B ITALIA PROJECT COLLECTION THE FIRM ACKNOWLEDGED THE TREND AND DESIRE TO “EXPERIENCE” DESIGN AND QUALITY OUTSIDE THE HOME. IN 2006, B&B ITALIA ACQUIRED 50% OF MOOOI, A DYNAMIC DUTCH FIRM THAT MAKES FURNISHING ACCESSORIES AND LIGHTING UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF ITS BRILLIANT ART DIRECTOR, MARCEL WANDERS. B&B ITALIA AND MOOOI WORK TOGETHER LINKED BY THE SAME PASSION FOR INNOVATION AND DESIGN BUT WITH RESPECT FOR DISTINCT AND COMPLEMENTARY PERSONALITIES AND STYLES.
